About the Artist

Artist Jocelyn Sandor Urban first traveled to Nantucket when she was just five years old and has visited every summer since. Her paintings and drawings are inspired by the beauty of Nantucket, and the carefree island days she remembers from her childhood. Jocelyn’s subjects are not limited to what she can see today. Her work often includes scenes of buildings long gone, places that exist now only in memory and on the canvas. Jocelyn is a member of the Artists Association of Nantucket and a recipient of the AAN’s Frank Swift Chase Award for plein air painting and the William Welsch Award for painting.

Structure is important to Jocelyn when she considers a painting. Literal structures, like buildings, boats, or fences, feature in her work. So, too, is there structure that forms in landscape with light and shadows, rolling hills, or clouds in the sky. Jocelyn is also known for her portraits of horses and dogs, having completed more than 2,000 commissions. She earned a BA in fine art from Skidmore College and an MFA in printmaking from UMASS Amherst.
