Downtown Nantucket’s unique architectural history offers both challenges and wonderful opportunity when it comes to design. When designing the interior of this historic downtown Nantucket residence, the Nantucket Looms Design Team worked closely with the homeowner to embrace this historic feel and inject it with colorful accents and eclectic style. By combining the client’s own artwork collection and antique furniture with bright colors and bold patterns, along with the original historic structure of this whaling captain’s home, the Nantucket Looms Design Team created a space that is cheerful, charming, historic and comfortable.
For this project, the client wanted bright, happy colors to go with her eclectic art collection. Many of her antique furniture and artwork was used along with updated comfortable furniture and bright colors. The designers along with the client chose user-friendly fabrics that could stand up to high traffic and remain fade and stain-resistant. The rug is a custom handwoven rag rug by a local island artist, Hillary Anapol.
The client likes to keep her windows open so vinyl grass cloth was chosen for the walls to hold up to the damp weather. Being on a busy street, the traditional historic windows contained shutters. To allow more light in, a half shutter was chosen. The top of the shutter also has a solar shade to filter the sunlight and protect the furniture fabrics from fading. An ivory handwoven Nantucket Looms mohair throw adorns this Lee Industries chair, upholstered with handprinted fabric by Peter Fassano.
The family room was designed with high traffic in mind. A tray from Nantucket Looms sits atop a leather ottoman by Lee Industries, which serves conveniently as a coffee table. The rug is a custom sized rug by Woodard & Greenstein.
A high performance fabric from Perennials was used on the sofa. The wood grain fabric adds a wonderful texture to the room. Again, a handwoven Nantucket Looms cashmere throw adorns the back of the sofa.
The sofa from Lee Industries is covered in a wonderful soft brushed cotton by Romo. The pillow was chosen for a pop of color and for its whimsical print. Nantucket Looms mohair throw is draped on the sofa.
To decorate the fireplace, these handmade Nantucket Balls by local artist Joanna Kane were used (purchased from Nantucket Looms). Artwork from the clients own collection adorns the wall, with light fixtures from Curry & Co.

Entrance to the home. The client wanted to add vibrant colors while still staying true to the historic integrity of the house. The rug here is a custom design hand tufted 100% wool rug. The Pottery Barn mirror is backed with a wallpaper by Carlton V. The furniture is from the homeowner’s own antique collection.
The stairway detail was a signature design from the original builder of the house in Nantucket’s whaling heyday circa 1822.

In the library, the Peter Fassano wallpaper is accented with artwork by David Wiggins purchased through Nantucket Looms.The bamboo chair, an estate sale find by the Nantucket Looms design team, sits perfectly beside the original fireplace.

The dining room table was custom designed for large family gatherings and was provided by Nantucket Looms. The client’s collection of sailor’s valentines adorns the wall, reinforcing the strong Nantucket historic feel of the house. The polypropylene rug was chosen to withstand high traffic and pets. This painting, by local artist Peter Sheppard, was chosen for the client’s son’s guest room because of his love for fishing. The decorative ACK balls by Joanne Kane adorn the mantle. Both pieces of original artwork were purchased through Nantucket Looms.

The hand printed floral fabric was chosen because of the homeowners love of gardening. Custom linens match the fabric. The iron bed gives the room an airy feel for those evenings you want to sleep with the windows open. Rattan lamps are used beside the bed and. the chartreuse bedside tables are in keeping with the garden theme.
In the master bedroom, the rug from Colony Rug Co. was chosen for its wonderful feel on bare feet. The colors add brightness while the custom sheets and bedding were chosen to coordinate with the hand printed fabrics. A Nantucket Looms handwoven cashmere throw is displayed on the bed.
Handprinted linen from Raoul Textiles was used to warm the master bedroom and sitting area with a relaxed roman shade.

The historic home’s third floor was converted to a guest bedroom. The polypropylene rug was custom cut by Colony Rug Co. to go around structural beams in the middle of the room.
